Unique fun clothing using reclaimed textiles
I took a full 2-week break from sewing at Christmas 2025 but, of course, my head was still pondering new ideas. I decided I would make more clothes for myself in 2026, using reclaimed fabrics.
I found a fun Scooby Doo sleeping bag in January and knew immediately that it would make an amazing coat, so bought it. I used an oversized fleece jacket, left at the end of my last clothes swap, to mock up a coat pattern.
The whole process made me smile so much. I posted pics of the finished coat to my social media and folk seemed to love it too.
My daughter decided she would like one and I managed to find a fun vintage Looney Tunes sleeping bag for hers.
I then found a different Looney Tunes version, so I made it up into another coat. It was so cute I couldn’t bear to part with it – so I gave the original Scooby Doo coat to a friend. I then made a few more jackets for friends.
As I posted pics to my social media, people have asked why these jackets have not appeared on the website. I’ve been told that many of the big companies do not like folk to sew/make items to sell with their images on – they are protective of their licenced images, understandably so.
Because of this I don’t want to sell branded jackets as such. However, I think I could offer an alteration service – turning an old sleeping bag, duvet cover or whatever, into something else.
It takes me 4-5 hours to alter a sleeping bag into a jacket, so folk wanting a similar jacket would pay for 4-5 hours of my time, plus the cost of materials. Each jacket uses one sleeping, half an old duvet cover and a zip. Some of the unusual vintage sleeping bags can be quite pricey so that will impact the price of whatever is being made.
I went down a little rabbit hole, of course, and I bought several fun sleeping bags. Many are a small children’s size, and this does limit the size possibilities of each finished jacket of course. The maximum size is probably a ladies’ size 16-18 (with it being a less boxy for the 18). The smallest is probably a size 8-10, with an oversized fit. There may be ways to increase the coat size with a bigger sleeping bag, or reduce the size if required.
